A shocking incident near the Mullaperiyar Dam bund area in Veerapandi, Theni district, has caused widespread concern across the region. Three auto drivers have been arrested by the police for attempting to sexually assault two young women who had come to the area with a male friend for leisure.
The accused have been identified as Vignesh (27) and Kunal (25), both from Government Higher Secondary School Street, Veerapandi, and Hariharan (21) from Amman Nagar. All three are reportedly working as auto drivers in the locality.
According to reports, the three men took advantage of the situation when the two young women and their male friend were near the dam area. They allegedly attacked the group and attempted to sexually assault the women. It is also reported that one of the women was left unable to raise an alarm due to the trauma of the incident.
Local bystanders noticed the commotion and immediately intervened, preventing the accused from escaping. Thanks to their timely action, the suspects were quickly restrained, and the Theni district police were alerted.



Police rushed to the scene and arrested the three men without delay. They have been booked under various sections, including attempted rape and crimes against women. Investigations are ongoing.
All three accused are currently in judicial custody. The victims have received necessary medical care and are also being provided with psychological counseling support.
This incident has once again raised serious concerns about women’s safety in public places. However, the swift and decisive action taken by Additional Superintendent of Police of Theni District – Kalaikathiravan Theni Sub-Divisional Police Officer Devaraj, Inspectors Ramlakshmi, Jawhar, and Allinagaram Inspector Bhuvaneshwari, along with other officers involved, has drawn widespread appreciation from the public.
