Authorities in Rajapalayam subdivision have intensified operations to eradicate illegal and harmful tobacco products such as gutka and ganja, which are banned by the government for posing severe health risks. As per the instructions of Virudhunagar District SP Kannan, police teams led by DSP Basina PV have been actively conducting continuous patrols and surveillance across the region.
Based on confidential information, North Police Station Inspector Ashok Babu, Sub-Inspector Rajkumar and a team of police personnel were conducting vehicle checks at the checkpoint on Madurai Road. During the inspection, they stopped a suspicious car. The driver was identified as Andrews (30) from Kalakkad in Tenkasi district, and the person accompanying him was identified as Srinivasan from Denkanikottai in Krishnagiri district.
Just as the police moved towards the rear of the vehicle to open the car’s trunk, the two men suddenly sped off in the car. After driving a short distance, they abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. The police seized the car and brought it to the Rajapalayam North Police Station. A detailed search revealed approximately 240 kg of tobacco products inside the vehicle, valued at around ₹1,40,000. A manhunt is underway to arrest the two who fled.
Meanwhile, officers from the Rajapalayam South Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Selvam, detained a suspicious individual under the railway overbridge. Upon inspection, they seized 1 kg 100 grams of ganja from him. He was identified as Jeyan (64), a resident of Peraiyur taluk in Madurai district. The police produced him before the court following his arrest.
