Greater Chennai Police’s “Kaaval Karangal” Reunites 20 Missing Persons with Families in June 2025

Under the compassionate leadership of Commissioner Thiru A. Arun, IPS, the Greater Chennai Police continues its humanitarian outreach through the “Kaaval Karangal” initiative, reuniting 20 missing and homeless individuals with their families during June 2025 alone.

The initiative, which focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned and vulnerable persons, rescued a total of 120 individuals between 01.06.2025 and 30.06.2025. Among them, 59 were provided shelter, 32 were admitted to psychiatric care facilities, and 9 were hospitalized for physical illnesses. Moreover, 105 unclaimed deceased individuals received dignified final rites with the help of NGO partners.

So far in 2025, of the 802 rescued individuals, 142 have been successfully traced and restored to their families. A notable success occurred on 26.06.2025, when a 72-year-old woman, Mrs. Vanaja, was found disoriented near Central Railway Station. Despite her poor health, the Kaaval Karangal team traced her family in Ayanavaram. Her son, Mr. Bharani Kumar, who had filed a missing person complaint at the K2 Ayanavaram Police Station (Crime No. 251/2025), was able to welcome her back on 02.07.2025 after official verification.

Operating 24×7 through the helpline 94447 17100, “Kaaval Karangal” works in coordination with NGOs, shelter homes, and hospitals to assist missing, abandoned, or homeless individuals across the city.

Since its inception in 2021, the initiative has:

Rescued: 8,498 individuals

Provided shelter to: 5,715 persons

Reunited with families: 1,358 individuals

Facilitated psychiatric care for: 1,032

Hospitalized: 393

Conducted dignified last rites for: 5,438 unclaimed deceased

The Greater Chennai Police urges the public to support this noble cause by using the Kaaval Karangal helpline (94447 17100) to report and assist any distressed individuals, fostering a more humane and caring society.
